What is Ally Bank?

Ally Bank is a completely digital bank; there are no brick-and-mortar locations. It offers many benefits and features for customers, including no account minimums for savings accounts, checking accounts and certain CDs. Many accounts offer a higher-than-average annual percentage yield (APY).

Some features of Ally Bank include:

  • No overdraft fees, low balance fees or cashier check fees for savings and checking accounts
  • Everyday rewards credit card with up to 3% cash back
  • Self-directed investing with cryptocurrency options and commission-free exchange-traded funds (ETFs)
  • Personal, auto and mortgage loans

Ally Bank’s savings account comes with tools that make saving for financial goals simple. The buckets option allows you to separate your savings into sub-accounts without the money leaving your main savings account. Surprise savings happens when Ally Bank transfers safe-to-save money from your linked checking account to your savings.

How Ally Bank works

Signing up for an Ally Bank account should take less than 15 minutes online. You can also choose to sign up over the phone with a specialist at any time. Opening a new account will require you to provide the following:

  • Social Security number
  • U.S. residential address
  • Legal name and birthdate
  • Driver’s license

Later in the application process, you can add up to four joint account holders, depending on the account. For individual retirement accounts (IRAs), only one account holder is allowed.

Applying for additional accounts or services is a similar process, though once you have one account, it should be easier to apply for another. Investment accounts and loan applications might require additional information to qualify.

Even though you will not be able to deposit cash into your account, you will still be able to deposit checks up to $50,000 in a single day and $250,000 total within 30 days through the mobile app. If you need to deposit more than the electronic limit, you can mail additional checks to Ally Bank.

Withdrawing cash is also convenient, with over 43,000 free-to-use ATMs across the country and up to $10 ATM reimbursements per statement cycle for out-of-network ATM usage.

I deposited a real check into my account that cleared on 10-10-23. On 10-12-23, the check was returned and left me overdrawn by $106.68. I contacted Ally’s customer service by email and I was told the check was returned due to Refer to Maker. On 10-13-23, I received an email saying I was overdrawn and to make a deposit to get my balance to 0. A few hours later on that same day, I received another email from Ally saying that suspicious activity was detected and were restricting access to my account. So I was not able to log into my account or deposit any money into my account. The email about the suspicious activity told me to call their fraud department. I did and Ally asked me some questions and said that they were doing an investigation and that the investigator would get back to me. I said I would be depositing money to get my balance up, but the lady said not to worry about that while the investigation was going on.

I still hadn’t heard from anyone and called again for an update. The woman on the phone said they were doing a high priority investigation into fraud, asked me some questions and said I couldn’t make any more deposits because nothing was going in and nothing was going out, and said the investigator would contact me, who never did. Then a few days later, on October 23, I received an email from Ally saying my account was restricted because it was overdrawn by $39.67 and I had to make a deposit in full or they would report my account to ChexSystems, a consumer reporting agency and engage law enforcement and, if appropriate, file a criminal complaint.

First I was told my account was restricted because of this investigation, and not to worry about being overdrawn and that I couldn’t put any money into it, then I get the above email. I called and left a message for them at the fraud department to call me and let me know what was going on with the investigation and no one called me back. So after getting no answers, I went to the BBB and of course then they finally replied to me. The lady, Jessica, said they closed my account because they didn't get a deposit of $39.67 by October 25th. No one ever told me that I had to make a deposit by then or they would close my account! I couldn't even get into my account to make any deposits between October 13th and October 25th because they wouldn't let me login to my account by computer or into the cell phone app to make a ACH deposit or check deposit due to security reasons while they were investigating!

After all this I was the one being penalized and treated like a criminal when I did nothing wrong and was never told by anyone on the phone or in an email to put money in my account by October 25th or they'd close it! I think that was just a date they made up frankly. But I could care less that they closed my account because I wasn't going to stay with this lousy bank after all that anyway. (While this was going on, I already opened a new account with a better bank). Then she says Ally has award winning customer service. What a joke that is and what a joke this bank is! Don't do business with them, because they don't care about their customers and I was with them for over 10 years and this is how I get treated!

I tried to distribute an IRA I had with Ally Bank. "Customer" service non-existent. They kept sending me the wrong forms or falsely telling me that I returned blank forms. Still cannot get my IRA distributed.

I did a auto loan modification with a live agent and was told multiple times by multiple people about how I would receive the loan modification. Email, no Email, postal service, both, one or the other, DocuSign, etc. I was also told by 3 different agents about how long it would take to receive the modification. Anywhere from a couple of hours to 48hrs. The last agent I talked to was constantly contradicting her self and kept talking over me when I tried to explain the situation. They also would not give me the extension of the original agent I talked to or transfer me to her. In the end nothing was resolved. So I told them I would just make the scheduled agreed upon payments and wait for the modification in my email or postal service.

I told them to just send the modification both ways as was originally stated by the last agent I talked to. She wanted me to call back after 48hrs if I didn't receive the modification by email. I said, "No, I've already called 3 times in less than 24hrs." Still no answers, just more questions. This is on them now to figure out and get it together. Absolutely terrible experience and customer service. As usual in life nobody is on the same page, does what they're supposed to or follows through on anything.

This bank is a joke, they will only a third-party check only if they can increase the price for a payoff by 5k. I have leasing vehicles for the last 20 years and this by far the worst financial company I have dealt with. Do not use this bank, they will screw you and tell you that’s their policy.

I am the executor of an estate account. Ally was notified of the decedent's passing, and then supplied with all require court documents to move the assets to release the account into the estate. Over 2 1/2 months from first notice, Ally can only say that they are "researching the account". All other banks I have dealt with long since resolved the estate accounts. Ally's phone representative was rude, refused to give details, did not resolve or provide any information, and ultimately hung up on me when I asked for him to note the account records to reflect my contact with him. I have been promised escalation and return of calls on several occasions, with no return calls, and no records of the first calls.

Their customer service is the worst. I have called 10+ times in two days to get absolutely nowhere. EVERY CALL WAS DROPPED OR DISCONNECTED. Only one rep even thought to ask to call me back. No one was able to help. ALL I GOT WAS REROUTED AND HUNG UP ON. Then next day, a rep leaves a voicemail with their number and extension and I get hung up on, AGAIN, in the middle of him asking me questions. NO CALL back. I call him back twice and he refuses to answer. The person that finally was able to help, had me on speaker phone, I could only understand half of what was said to me. ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS SET UP AND NEXT TO NOTHING FOR TRAINING FOR THEIR CUSTOMER SERVICE REPS.

Ever since they acquired Ollo Card Services, my credit card’s APR increased to 30.24%! It is by far the credit card with the highest interest rate. When I emailed their executive team, I received a scripted reply that my interest rate is influenced by the Prime Rate. Funny. None of the other credit cards have increased significantly like Ally Bank’s. Ollo Card Services kept my interest rate at 27.5-28%. Ally Bank recently increased my credit limit however, I will only use it for an emergency.

I have banked at many institutions in the past 30 years and this is easily the worst experience I have ever had (and I've had some poor experiences). Two days after I opened my account, they locked my account right after I got paid and told me there was "suspicious behavior". The only thing they would tell me is that I logged in too many times (not sure how many is too many on an online only account) and tried to transfer my money. I only opened the account because my new employer pays me using Zelle and my primary bank doesn't work with Zelle. After almost two weeks, they told me (I had to call them) they were closing my account but refused to tell me what I did or why they made that decision. Do NOT bank with Ally unless you're prepared to lose access to any funds there. As you can see with from reviews here, this is normal behavior for this bank and you don't have to do anything suspicious for them to shut down your account.

I tried to link my CashApp to this account but CashApp wouldn't verify my account with them so I sent Ally the bank statements and they still closed my account... The fraud investigator never reached out to me to get a understanding and when I was told initially about this the woman who did reach out to me was so rude and nasty with me!!! I just talked to a guy in the fraud department for a update but he was dry and rude as well... I'd advise you to make sure you select the survey cause when you opt out of it the CSR have the tendency of being rude!!! I'd never recommend this bank if you are looking for a easy and smooth banking experience and to build a trusting relationship with them!! The people in the fraud department need to all be retrained on customer interactions!!! If you're considering this bank, run!! You'd be better off going through a credit union!!!

If you get a car loan from Ally Bank, RUN & request a different lender if through a dealer. Dealers must make hefty commissions from Ally because they seem to be a popular auto loan holder. I don't even believe this company is a real bank. They can not be reached by phone at all. When you call the bank and they find out you're inquiring about your car loan they tell you they can't help you and you have to go to the auto website. By the way, the auto website is different from the main bank website.

If you try to make a payment through the phone option you are re-directed to a 3rd party not affiliated with the bank. This 3rd party charges you a processing fee.

What kind of bank can't take a payment directly. If they were a real bank why would they need to outsource payments. They say their computer system goes down very night from midnight to 3 AM to update to better service you. I am in the Pacific time zone and hit the recording one night so figured OK, I'll still be up at 2AM my time to make my payment. I ended up trying to make the payment 7 hours later, 6 AM my time. Their system was still down with the same recording that they'll be down for 3 hours to better service you. I can't tell you how many times I've called in and gotten this recording and 3 hours after my first call their system is still down. I would assume it might have gone down before my initial call so I figure when 3 hours has passed I should be able to reach them.

I made a complaint directly to the bank. The response was a 2-page letter from someone in their "Executive Customer Relations" who only signed her first name. She then told me to reach her I should call in, hit an option, then hit a 2nd option, then her extension I guess. When you call in to number she provided you get a voicemail that doesn't give you any options to enter an option and goes to a general voicemail. Behind that letter was my entire car loan reminded me that I agreed to all their terms.

Yes, I agreed to their terms and I have no problem with the loan agreement. I was also assuming my loan was going through a real bank that is accessible and cooperative. I knew the bank was an online institution. I have no problem with that. The way they treat customers and the fact that you can't reach a real person & that they have to process a check through an outside 3rd party that obviously is not another bank make me thing, Ally really isn't a bank either.
