    What is Bekins Van Lines?

Established in 1851, Bekins Van Lines is a moving company with a wide range of services, including packing, transportation and storage for both local and interstate moves. Bekins handles both commercial and residential relocations and provides agents to assist in the planning and execution of all its moves. All its employees are subject to background checks, and its moving services are available both across the country and around the globe.

    Bekins Van Lines services

Bekins Van Lines offers services ranging from planning and packing to hauling and storage. For a residential move, you can start with an online ballpark estimate, then the company will arrange a free in-home estimate and provide a more precise quote. Your move will be supervised by a Bekins agent, and you can have its movers pack for you — or you can save money by packing yourself. The company offers limited liability and full replacement value protection. It also has short- and long-term storage options.

Bekins prides itself on moving everything (including industrial and medical equipment) except hazardous materials. It offers military relocation and is a service provider for the General Services Administration (GSA) and the Centralized Household Goods Traffic Management Program (CHAMP). The company can coordinate with your employer to offer relocation packages; its international relocation assistance services include language training and furniture rentals.

    Bekins Van Lines costs

Bekins Van Lines has a free ballpark estimate tool for residential moves on its website; for a move from a three-bedroom apartment in San Francisco to Seattle in mid-April, one online estimate from Bekins was between $3,839.36 and $5,047.99.

To get specific pricing information from Bekins, you’ll have to request a phone call with a service agent. The average cost of a move ranges from $200 to $5,000, depending on the distance and number of belongings. You can save money by packing some of your own items and moving in the fall or winter; peak times like spring and summer tend to be more expensive. Bekins also provides breakage protection for your belongings at an additional cost.

I scheduled a full service move, the movers missed an surprising amount of objects. As for delivery, they gave me over two separate dates which both turned out to be false. Bekins isn't the cheapest option, but cheaper options would be better.

This company treated my husband and I (and our belongings) with a complete lack of respect. Their communication throughout the entire process was extremely poor and they failed to meet even basic standards of communication and execution of what is supposed to be the core of their business. The entire moving process was an absolute fiasco. It seems nobody at this company has any idea what they are doing. Upon receipt of our shipment, items were significantly damaged and looked like they had been thrown around in the truck.

Despite misleading customer service claims on their website, nobody from Texas Moving Company or Bekins took any accountability for this. Emails and letters received no response. They spew complete garbage about how they care about their customers and how they go out of their way to make sure customers' needs are met, but proceed to treat you like complete crap. Misleading, disingenuous and flat-out lies. They don't care about their customers or their belongings. Doing business with this company is a huge risk that you will likely regret.

Bekins Saved Our Move!!! I had used Bekins once before for a cross-country move and was pleased. This past August my girlfriend and I were moving from DC to CA and asked them to come out and give me an estimate for moving the contents of our house. Their sales manager, Russell ** – who was professional, thoughtful, and courteous – came out and gave me an estimate and detailed potential savings based on possible move dates. I foolishly chose to go with American Van Lines to save a couple of thousand dollars. What’s that about penny wise/60 cents a pound foolish? Here’s the pattern of American Van Lines as revealed/confirmed by my experience and many, many others on Yelp ** and the Florida Better Business Bureau **. I urge you to read them. Here's what to watch out for with American Van Lines:

-- Excellent sales chatter before you sign the contract and they're very happy to take your 50 percent down payment (in our case about $4,500).

-- Once you sign the contract, you're assigned a "personal moving coordinator" as your contact who then never responds to your calls or emails.

-- They give you an initial three-day window but won't take into account your needs for confirming a specific day. For example, in Washington, DC, you can only get the required city-issued no parking signs for two days, and you have to put them up three days in advance. I kept telling our "personal moving coordinator" this, but she just ignored me.

-- Prepare to spend hours and hours on the phone with people who keep making promises they can't/won't keep.

-- And then, they never show up and try to keep your down payment!

After three tries of having American Van Lines fail pick up our stuff over a series of days and each time having it postponed by them, and facing a looming closing date on our house, we informed American Van Lines that they were in breach of our contract and we had to find a mover that would actually show up to move our stuff (they then tried to keep our money, which is their pattern, which we finally got back by lodging a dispute with our credit card company). With American Van Lines having failed to pick up our stuff on a Friday and Saturday, I called Russell, told him my tale of woe, and asked if Bekins could move us ASAP. That Saturday he arranged for our stuff to be moved on Wednesday (the earliest possible date since, as noted, DC requires you to post no-parking signs three days in advance) at basically his original estimate despite the late notice. And he was nice enough to not say, “I told you so.”

My experience with Bekins’ office staff was the exact opposite of dealing with American Van Lines. Everyone was professional, courteous, easily contacted, and genuinely concerned that the move went as smoothly as possible -- which it did at both ends. Bekins saved our move, acting swiftly and efficiently to resolve what was quickly becoming a crisis because of American Van Lines (the new owners of our house were moving in later that week). I cannot recommend Bekins more highly or thank them enough.

We moved across country, which is a stressful event in itself. The movers arrived three hours late to start with. They stayed until 10:00 pm and returned the next day. Thankfully my husband was driving so he was still there. The moving van arrived at a later time than expected but it wasn't an issue since we were waiting to move into our home. We had them move our things into a storage unit. We were present at that time. **Be sure you take photos of all of your furniture before you begin packing!! We noticed some damage to our freezer door and mentioned it to the driver. After the movers unloaded into the storage units they left. We then sat down with the driver who made a notation of the damaged freezer door. We had noticed (as per specific request) that none of the mattresses had mattress covers on them. When we had the items moved to our new home, we were present at the storage unit as well.

As the movers (different than before) loaded our items, they would draw attention to damages or poorly wrapped items, so we would know it wasn't from their movers. Once things were unloaded into our home, we noticed we were missing a mattress and box springs as well as some other damages. We contacted Bekins Claim adjuster and were asked to write out our concerns. We did this and sent it in to them. We received a letter of denial. When we contacted them again, she told us that they send out that letter to everyone at the beginning! Really?? Automatically? They offered us $96 for the damaged freezer door. Nothing for the missing mattress and box springs or any of the other damaged items!!

Their response was that we had agreed in advance in signing the paperwork when we left our home- only we had received no paper work at that time. We only got a list of the items loaded at our home, at the end of the arrival to the storage unit. And the mattress/box springs were listed! Then they said they couldn't be responsible for the items when it left the storage unit. We wrote them again to say how offended and disappointed we were and that we would like to work together to come to a fair agreement but to no avail. Just so unprofessional. They don't care about your things- Trust this and other reviewers, use a different company in moving the things you care about.

As you can see, others have had the same issues with Bekins. We were planned to have our driver and movers come on July 25th, 2022. The driver cancelled that morning. Customer service in corporate took 3 hours to contact me as they were looking for people to come and pack our things as scheduled, then look for another driver. After 3 hours, we were told packers were coming. They showed up and quickly packed our things, and didn’t finish until 7pm. We were on a flight to Washington where we were moving to the next morning.

After getting to our destination, we were told a driver and movers were coming on August 9th. That was the absolute last day before Bekins would have to pay the late delivery fee of $100 per day. When the driver showed up, that’s when he told us there was not enough room for all our items on his truck and that 2K pounds were left behind. When I called corporate in Indiana, they had no idea. So now we’re waiting for ANOTHER delivery and we had to wait for Bekins to schedule another driver. All of our TVs were part of what was left behind.

Weeks later, we were told that our items were coming on August 19th. When I asked about compensation for the late delivery, they said that “load backs” (their terminology) were not part of the company’s compensation plan. So in a nut shell, we had zero, nothing to do with why the load was late, but Bekins were not obligated nor wanted to compensate us for the late delivery of 10 days. Incredibly insulting. Corporate just pass the buck to others and no one will claim responsibility. To add insult to injury, we suggested Bekins to a neighbor and they used them as well. Don’t use them. Even if the salesperson seems knowledgeable and committed, if anything goes wrong, you’re on your own.

Please do not use this company for your move. They are not professional and when they damage and lose your goods they won’t take responsibility. We did an interstate move in June 2022. The movers were unprofessional and did not wrap furniture well. They were careless with it, which resulted in many damaged items. They also took items that were designated “Not to move” and ruined many medications, personal items etc. We also had several lost items. Upon delivery, they did not reassemble furniture and we still have parts and screws left that we are unsure where they go. The movers were sloppy, and the claim department is deceitful and will do anything not to have to pay fairly. RUN do not walk from this company! Their website sounds exactly what you are looking for, but nothing on their website accurately depicts the experience you will have with them.

Items were picked up, but delayed getting to my destination. 3 times the driver made a different excuse. After hearing we are working on it every day for 10 days, I finally found a company that could deliver within a few days, but they don't reassemble your items. Has to be the original company, and I have requested for someone to come, but they don't seem like they want to help me. After checking around I was overcharged by $5,000 min. I went without a bed or furniture for weeks. What was supposed to be a pleasant experience turned into a nightmare, I am still very sore having to sleep on the floor, and be inconvenienced with none of my things for that long of time, let alone the stress it has caused me. I still have tables, tvs, beds I need assembled.

      Reviewed June 20, 2022

The move with Bekins was traumatic. I chose Bekins to move me from one state to another. I didn't realize they'd be two quotes: one by a salesman and the second on moving day. Once my belongings reached their destination, I was pressed into service by the Bekins driver to help him check-in each box using the inventory labels Bekins people affixed to each box, but many were missing. I made many calls to the Bekins office to help me convince the Bekins driver to cooperate. Things such as sofa legs are missing and a valuable dining table was scratched. Bekins said they'd address these matters.

Anyway, I had use another moving company and they came in, packed everything, and then delivered my belongings my address. I call my experience with Bekins learning-by-burning. Their office people are great. The driver on my route was disrespectful and reprimanded (!). I silenced him by reminding him that I paid for his services and I wouldn't sign-off on his paperwork if he didn't hold his tongue; that did the trick. Make your own decision about hiring Bekins.

We moved from California to Michigan. I paid extra for insurance. They damaged many items. Please see photos below. The truck driver offered to pay for one broken table and I said, "No worries. I’ll file a claim." I filed a claim and they said they didn’t pack these items. When they did pack these items. Then they came back and said that my items were already damaged. Not only that but they didn’t even box or bag my expensive mattresses. I had custom pieces broken and antiques broken. I knew they would not be able to replace these items so I kindly asked for repairs not replacements. I go nothing but them telling me over and over that they were previously damaged or that they didn’t pack them.

I even just asked for the extra $500+ dollars I paid for the insurance back and didn’t get that either. I have made four large moves across country. I have never had an issue with repairs previously. This company is terrible. DONT USE THEM. RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN. Their sales people talk smack about the other companies to get you to feel like they have your best interests at heart. They don’t.

Beware of a good sales rep - he won me over against competitive bids and I deeply regret going with Bekins. Every step post sales rep was awful:

      - Sales rep assured me that his quotes were always low so there would be no surprises; his bid was actually $3k too low (nasty surprise). The Company told me that this was acceptable per their standards and wouldn't release my goods until I paid.

      - Driver did not show up on the date of loading and our goods remained on a truck for three months after they put us to the back of the queue. Very little correspondence from the company unless I reached out and pushed them to give me an expected timeline. My family of five had no idea when our truck would arrive. For three months we lived in an empty house (3 kids, ages 8, 8 and 6). No sympathy or sense of urgency from Bekins.

      - When the truck arrived, we learned that the back hatch was broken and did not close properly so our goods were exposed to rain as they drove from Washington state to Georgia.

      - Considerable damage to our goods when we unpacked them. In the claims process, Bekins references all the fine print in their inventory sheets/contract and the company has been unwilling to do what is right.

      - If you do go with Bekins despite my experience, make sure you check through every single inventory item at delivery. We had items that were missing and the company is unwilling to reimburse for those because we did not call these out at the time of delivery. It will take several additional hours to inventory everything and the movers will need to stay there until you are done, but if you do not do this critical step the company will not take responsibility for losing items.

In my opinion, if you do not have a good lawyer willing to handhold the bid/moving/claims process from start to finish, do not do business with this company!
