How does Embrace Pet Insurance work?

When you sign your pet up with Embrace, you can take them to any vet for the services they need. You are not required to use a vet within a specific network. Once your pet has been treated, you complete the claim form, submit it and are reimbursed for services and treatment covered under your plan.

There are different coverage levels to choose from, and you can downgrade or upgrade your policy at any time. When you insure your pet with Embrace, they are covered for life. Your coverage never drops based on your pet's age or health.

Cancer treatment, behavioral therapy and breed-specific conditions are covered, and the company reimburses you for vet exam fees. Dogs and cats under the age of 14 are eligible for full coverage, and pets older than this are eligible for accident-only coverage.

Embrace has a unique online resource that lists the most popular dog breeds and their most common breed-specific medical conditions. This can help pet owners choose the right coverage for their pets.

Embrace Wellness Rewards program

Embrace’s Wellness Rewards program, which can be added to your policy, reimburses you for preventative care. This includes wellness exams, microchipping, spaying/neutering, vaccinations and flea medication.

There are three annual allowance options for Wellness Rewards reimbursement:

  • $250 allowance per policy year
  • $450 allowance per policy year
  • $650 allowance per policy year

Embrace Pet Insurance coverage

Embrace is transparent about what policies do and do not cover. The company’s website lists the different coverage options and defines eligibility requirements and guidelines for preexisting conditions.

Accidents
Older pets can benefit from Embrace’s accident-only coverage plan. This plan covers your pet if it ingests a foreign object, is cut or is hit by a car. This plan reimburses you up to $5,000 each year. You’ll pay a $100 deductible once a year, and then you're reimbursed 90% of your veterinary bills when your pet experiences an accident.
Illnesses
Embrace covers every illness from nose to tail with no precondition limitations. This means if your pet is prone to breed-specific illnesses, medical treatment is covered under your plan.
Dental issues
Dental pain can be very uncomfortable and sometimes dangerous for pets. Dental work on animals can also be very expensive. Embrace covers dental treatment for periodontal disease, gingivitis, root canals, crowns, oral masses and extractions. Up to $1,000 in dental work is covered per year.
Cancer and chronic conditions
Cancer coverage is included in all plans and includes everything from the consultation testing and radiation to chemotherapy, surgery, hospitalization and rehabilitation. Cancer treatments are one of the most expensive medical treatments for pet owners, and chemotherapy can run $150 to $600 a dose. Cancer coverage means you can give your pet a fighting chance without worrying about how you’re going to afford it.

Embrace Pet Insurance also covers a wide range of treatments including:

  • Alternative therapies and rehabilitation
  • Behavioral therapy
  • Specialist care
  • Emergency veterinary care
  • Diagnostic testing
  • Hospitalization and surgery
  • Prescription drug coverage
  • Prosthetics and mobility devices

Conditions not covered

The list of what Embrace does not cover is shorter than the list of what it does cover. Basically, Embrace covers treatment and services that are crucial to the health and well-being of your pet, but not cosmetic services, breeding, whelping or preexisting conditions.

How much does Embrace Pet Insurance cost?

Dog insurance costs average around $30 to $40 per month, and cat insurance averages around $15 to $20 per month. Embrace has a one-time enrollment fee of $25 and a $1 monthly processing fee for those who pay monthly.

Embrace lets you customize your plan, so you can choose the deductible, the reimbursement percentage, any riders or optional coverage add-ons and annual maximums. You know your pet and your budget, and Embrace has coverage options to fit them both.

I have insured three pets with Embrace. All of my pets were adults when I adopted them and by then each had their own pre-existing condition that I knew wouldn't be covered. But in spite of that, as my dogs entered their senior years, Embrace was always there for their regular wellness, for an accident one dog had that caused a dislocated hip, and the other ailments that came up in both dogs' geriatric years. But I have never had to ask myself if I should get a dental cleaning, or schedule a surgery, or take my dog to see a specialist, or have an MRI done because I knew I could submit the claim to Embrace.

My dogs got the best care the doctors could provide, up until the very end of their lives. My cat is still enjoying the benefits of Embrace. And the peace of mind that I could rely on Embrace to process the claims quickly and efficiently helped me get through that uniquely special and heart-breaking late phase of each of my dogs' lives. Embrace Pet Insurance is one of the best financial and emotional decisions I have ever made. I always recommend it to my friends when they adopt a pet.

I have been an Embrace customer for several years and I love them. Like any product or service you have to read and understand your policy so you know what you are buying. If you know what you are getting you will not be disappointed. Recently I added a rescue to my policy and she ended up being pretty sick. Embrace and I went back and forth on what was pre-existing. The first list I was provide troubled me as it was extensive. I filed a request for a review and what Embrace came back with was so much better and I was very happy. There was still one condition that I wanted to discuss with them. My pup was very sick and the medical history was complicated and the timeline from visiting several vets was hard to put all the pieces together. I expected the Embrace team to grow tired of my back and forth and reject my final plea but they really listened and really worked to understand the order of events.

It took a few months but the underwriting finally was able to see the big picture. I was so overjoyed that they reprocessed several claims and paid out almost $1500 the next day. Embrace has won my loyalty. Thank you Embrace for taking care of my pet family. A big thanks to Alissa **, Claims Adjuster and Rachel **, Chief Underwriter on behalf of American Modern Home Insurance Company for being my advocates.

We have always had multiple pets during our 57 years of marriage and have used various pet insurance companies during that period. We currently have 2 cats that have been insured with Embrace Pet Insurance Company for 10+ years and Embrace has proven to us every step of the way that they are the best in the business. One of our cats acquired glaucoma 2+ years ago and was nearly blind when the condition was detected. The cat required complex laser eye surgery to regain her vision, plus recurring vet visit checkups and numerous eye-drops/other medications since completion of the successful surgery. We are pleased that the cat now seems to be doing well.

Needless to say, we have had and continue to have a lot of recurring claims to submit to Embrace. In each instance, all of our claims have been satisfied by Embrace without hesitation, with accuracy and in a timely manner. Embrace performs at this high level of satisfaction because they have an Internet website and processes for paperless submissions of claims that is very user-friendly. Also, Embrace has an outstanding staff of friendly professionals that processes the claims with immediacy. Further, Embrace deposits our reimbursements overnight directly into our checking account. To the contrary, other pet insurance companies that we used previously have never ever approached the integrity and efficiency demonstrated by Embrace Pet Insurance Company, proving to us that Embrace is the best in the business! Clearly, WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND EMBRACE AND THEIR SERVICES!!!

I have been a client of Embrace for a number of years now, I have always had the best of experiences when having to work with them during difficult and emotional times. Just like human health insurance, you don't contact them just to say "Hi!," you contact them when there are issues. The agents and staff at Embrace are some of the nicest people that I have had the pleasure of doing business with. They are empathetic, quick to respond, and very helpful. The prices are reasonable too.

Like many insurance companies, I'm sure they get a bad rap as Insurance companies are easy to attack, especially if one doesn't understand the foundations of risk and cost avoidance that underlie the reasons and cost of having insurance. Embrace has been very easy to work with on those times that we needed help with the expensive costs that come with keeping our little furry friends healthy. Embrace agents are also very empathetic, especially when the health news is dire, and this isn't fake caring, they really care. I highly recommend Embrace to anyone with a pet, who wants to make sure they can afford to move forward with those hard medical decisions that may come up during the lifetime of your pet.

My 4 year old mastiff was diagnosed with cancer last week. We are facing surgery and chemotherapy. We have had Embrace since he was a baby. So far Embrace has been fabulous! All claims processed and money back within 3 days. Thank you so much for making this process so easy. We have so much to worry about and I am so grateful that money is not one of them and we can focus on taking care of our boy.

With the claim process going so smoothly through the testing and diagnosing part of this it is a huge weight off my shoulders to feel confident that it will be the same through the surgery and treatment part. I submitted three claims each in the evening after each visit and by the following night each one was approved and I have already received the reimbursement for all of them. I would be in a complete meltdown if I had to figure out how to pay for all of this out of pocket. Palmer is my best friend and just as important as our children are. I can’t thank you enough for taking so much stress of our shoulders!

We initially bought pet insurance for both our dogs. When you initially sign up for their insurance you have to have your vet sign an orthopedic waiver. We did that for both our dogs in 2020 and our younger dog had no orthopedic issues. Fast forward to 2023, and our older dog dies and I want to increase the coverage for our other dog in case something happens to him. Because I changed the policy, Embrace makes you wait another six months under their orthopedic period.

During this time, our dog started to have a limp and I called to see what we could do. I was told about the orthopedic waiver at this time and was told I had to wait until 11/17/23 to even get an x-ray done. The rep told me that I could have a pre-cert form completed to see how much it would cost to have the x-ray. I called our vet and I HAD to have our vet examine him since he never had any issues in the past and she needed to see what was going on with him. I took him to the vet and she said an x-ray needed to be completed to see what was going on. She completed the pre-cert form and I sent it into Embrace.

I waited almost three weeks and received an email from a claims adjuster who reported that since I had the pre-cert form completed and the vet stated he had a limp the x-ray wouldn't be covered. Even after 11/17/23. I explained this makes no sense because in order for him to get an x-ray I had to take him to the vet for the limp. I was under the assumption that the pre-cert form would allow us to get an x-ray done earlier than 11/17/23, but this was not explained to me. I asked the claims adjuster if I had just waited until 11/17/23 and then had the x-ray it would have then been covered and she said yes. The communication was awful and now they won't pay for the x-ray.

After this fiasco, my husband and I decided to cancel our policy because we rarely take him to the vet and I'm not going to pay for insurance that won't even cover an x-ray. I feel deceived and lied to by their staff. They should have been more transparent with how they communicate especially when it comes to waiver periods and pre-existing conditions. What's incredibly frustrating is that the claims adjuster had one year worth of our dog's medical records which showed no previous limp and they still make you wait six months before you can the coverage you pay for.

Hello Jessica, first and foremost we are sorry to hear about the passing of your sweet companion. We understand going through such a stressful time could make you re-evaluate your coverage to ensure your policy still fits your needs. When coverage is increased the waiting periods, including the six month orthopedic waiting period, reset and any conditions that occurred prior to the upgrade date or within the new waiting periods are then considered pre-existing and will not be eligible for coverage. We strive to be as clear and upfront as possible in regard to the terms and conditions of the policy and in order to make that change, we are required to receive confirmation from you that you understand and acknowledge the result of the change.

Since we did receive that confirmation, we proceeded with fulfilling your request to increase the coverage. We understand this may not be the outcome you were hoping for, but we hope it helps provide some clarification in regard to our standard operating procedure. I see you already spoke with one of our team members about your concerns, but if you have any additional questions, please give us call at 800-511-9172 and we’re happy to help.

I had even made a mistake in the cost of surgery and entered a price lower than what was on the invoice, but Embrace caught the mistake and used the actual total to calculate the reimbursement amount. Thank you for making the process so easy.

Where do I begin... I got Embrace $15k coverage in the worst case scenario for both my cats. I did a ton of research and they provided dental illness, waived exams if you paid for it, and had a deal for multiple cats. The only red flags were several reviewers said they had a tendency to really exaggerate and define everything as a preexisting condition.

Nothing happened for 3-4 months after receiving coverage. Then on a vet visit, my vet noticed my cat had loss weight. For my first vet visit claim, I found out they had never bothered to review my pet's medical records and proceeded to start adding ticky tacky "pre-existing conditions" which included something such as slightly dirty teeth now being an exclusion for dental diseases. I literally purchased them partially because they were one of the few companies that covered dental diseases. But apparently that has a massive asterisk to it.

The best part about my first claim? It took 1.5 months for them to start telling me anything and only after I had to reach out to embrace and the vets because apparently they were just going to string me along until I did anything. So basically I paid them for 4.5 months only to find out they were going to start adding ineligibility.

Flash forward to today 3 months from my first claim, I still haven't been paid yet. My cat is now dead. I am now finding out not only did they take 2.5 months to make their first decision on my pet's claim, they have suddenly reversed decision and telling me I'm not paying squat. Between dealing with my pet's health issues and death, I have to be the one constantly badgering the insurance company and reaching out to the vets to get information. Not only did I have to stress about my cat, I had to deal with this absolute dog poop of a company that has dragged its feet for anything just to screw me at every turn. I have spoken to probably 4 people at the company so far and I'm likely going to speak to a 5th. If you want an insurance company that will ultimately not pay you, expect you to do all the work yourself, try to put anything and everything as exclusionary, and just add stress to you while your pet is dying. Then yeah Embrace is for you.

What a frigging scam. I'm canceling my other pet's insurance policy. I have 0 trust if anything happened with my other cats they wouldn't find a way to bend me over here too. Could not recommend a company less - end to end, just completely screwing me. I guess it's better I find out now, because apparently if my cat had gotten sick 5 years from now they would have told me after collecting 5 years of checks they would just absolutely screw me. What the actual hell. 0 stars if I could. People are right, set aside the money you need - you won't get screwed. Embrace definitely is prone to flagging everything as pre-existing. I'm appealing but I expect nothing and just more stress. Thanks for squat!

First and foremost, Norman we are so sorry to hear about the passing of your furry companion. We know losing a loved one is not easy and having to follow up with us after that can be difficult. We want to be upfront about our coverage and pre-existing conditions which is defined and agreed upon in our terms and conditions as: 32. Pre-existing Condition(s) means:
    a. A Chronic Condition observed by you or your Veterinary Provider prior to the end of the Waiting Period
for your Pet(s) and any related conditions; or
    b. An Illness or Injury that first occurred or showed Clinical Signs prior to the end of the Waiting Period for
your Pet and any related conditions.
    c. Undiagnosed conditions with the same Clinical Signs as those in a. or b. above are also considered pre-existing.

We do want you to have confidence in your policy, so we do offer a medical history review at the end of the 14 day illness waiting period which will let you know if there are any pre-existing exclusions or give you the all clear on coverage. If you do not opt to have this review done, then medical records are reviewed at the time of you first claim. Although we try to process claims as quickly as possible, sometimes it can take longer to process the first accident or illness claim as we gather your pet’s complete medical history. Obtaining medical history is a process we are continuously working to improve. We work directly with your vet to gather any additional medical records needed to review your pet’s complete medical history and we copy you on any email request to keep you in the loop. You can always check the status of your claim on your MyEmbrace account at any time which will include if your claim is pending due to missing documentation. We see you are in communication with one of our team members , but if you have any additional questions in the meantime, please give us call at 800-511-9172 and we’re happy to help!

I’ve had an Embrace Pet Insurance Policy for several years and every claim has been denied. Most recently I took my dog Perry to an Emergency Veterinary Clinic for what was ultimately diagnosed as “Idiopathic Vestibular Syndrome, a neurological disorder seen in senior dogs. Embrace denied this claim because blood work done during the visit showed the presence of “Azotemia” or Renal Disease, a pre-existing condition. In other words they used the presence of kidney disease to not pay the claim for his new neurological disorder which is totally unrelated. This would be like not paying for cancer care because of the presence of kidney disease. They are completely unethical and I would not recommend Embrace to anyone!

We are sorry to hear you were disappointed with your policy, Patrick. We are unable to provide coverage for pre-existing conditions, which would mean your pet was showing signs, symptoms, or diagnosed with the related condition within the year prior to the policy purchase or within the waiting periods. As our policy terms and conditions state, this would also include diagnosed or undiagnosed conditions with the same clinical signs of a pre-existing condition. There is a 2 day accident waiting period, a 14 day illness waiting period, and a 6 month orthopedic waiting period for dogs. We do however distinguish between temporary and permanent pre-existing conditions. If a pre-existing conditions is deemed temporary, if your pet goes 12 consecutive months without any recurrent signs or symptoms it could be eligible for expiration so we can provide coverage in the future. If you have any additional questions, concerns, or would like to discuss this further, please give us a call at 800-511-9172 and one of our Customer Care Embracers would be happy to help!

When the review was finally completed, Embrace provided inaccurate and unacceptable findings on my dog’s preexisting conditions. I immediately cancelled the policy and requested a refund for the months I paid with no services provided in exchange. From January 24 to October 30, 2023, Embrace provided no coverage and did not attempt to contact me, obtain records, or cancel the policy. Nonetheless, Embrace took my money and now refuses to refund me. Embrace has stolen my money and prevented me from obtaining meaningful insurance for my dog.
