    Pros & Cons

    Pros

    • No application or origination fees
    • Wide range of loan amounts
    • Other financing options available

    Cons

    • Must be a member to apply
    • Loan amounts limited to certain terms

    Bottom Line

First Tech offers personal loans for up to $50,000, but you’ll have to become a member first. You can check your rate on its website without hurting your credit, and it usually provides funds on the same day as approval.

First Tech Federal Credit Union requirements

First Tech’s personal loans are only available to members of its credit union. In order to become a member, you generally need to meet one of the following criteria (other routes to membership may be possible, though):

    • You have someone in your family or household who is already a First Tech member.
    • You or a family member work for a company on First Tech’s partner list or for the state of Oregon.
    • You work or live in Lane County, Oregon.
    • You belong to the Computer History Museum (membership starts at $15 per year) or the Financial Fitness Association (membership is $8 per year).

Once you’re a First Tech member, you’re always a member — even if you move, change jobs, or stop paying for an annual membership with the Computer History Museum or Financial Fitness Association.

First Tech states that it doesn’t require borrowers to have perfect credit. However, if your credit score is higher, you’ll likely get a lower annual percentage rate (APR).

First Tech Federal Credit Union application process

You can apply for a personal loan through First Tech’s online application process or by calling its toll-free number. However, you might want to check your rate first. Checking your rate can help you decide if First Tech has the right loan for your needs without dinging your credit score.

If you already have a First Tech account, a personal loan application will be faster since most of the information is pre-filled for you. Other applicants will need to fill in their personal information, including date of birth and Social Security number, along with employment details.

First Tech Federal Credit Union rates and fees

First Tech Federal Credit Union offers a wide range of loan terms and amounts. Borrowers can secure a personal loan for as little as $500 or as much as $50,000. How much you borrow will determine your loan term (or vice versa), and the longer the term, the higher the minimum APR.

First Tech doesn’t publish maximum APRs for personal loans on its website, but a company representative we spoke with told us the maximum APR for all loan terms is 18.00%.

    Loan termAPR rangeLoan amount (min/max)
    24 months6.70% to 18.00%$500 to $35,000
    36 months8.49% to 18.00%$500 to $35,000
    48 months9.49% to 18.00%$5,000 to $35,000
    60 months9.99% to 18.00%$10,000 to $35,000
    84 months11.79% to 18.00%$20,000 to $50,000

It’s worth mentioning that First Tech has other financing options available that come with different repayment terms and APRs. For example, First Tech offers a revolving line of credit with rates as low as 12%. With that line of credit, you can borrow up to $25,000 and make payments only when you carry a balance.

You can also purchase optional payment protection through First Tech’s DebtSafe program. This protection could cancel your loan balance or payments up to the contract maximums in case of death, disability or involuntary unemployment.

I financed my 2022 CRV and unfortunately it was totaled. The dealership fixed their part but the bank refused to help on their end. The dealership took a while to cancel the extended warranty and the GAP they sold me didn't want to pay off the remaining balance after my insurance. I’ve never been late on my loan payments. I’ve always been early and paid extra. But for 4 months, the bank reported me delinquent to the credit bureaus and my credit dropped over 100 points. I've called, emailed and even the dealer called and explained the situation, but the bank refuses to send a notification to the credit bureaus to fix the delinquent reports. On top of this, the person I spoke to on the phone had the nerve to ask me if I wanted her to get me pre-approved for another loan.

For my future car purchase, I will not finance with this dealer nor will I do any type of business with them. I was going to change my banking from Wells Fargo to here but not anymore. They're supposedly there to help their customers but they refuse to help me. Worst business ever! I don’t recommend anyone to conduct business with them.

I have used many banks, all the big ones. None have come close to the outstanding service at First Tech. Their employees are great as well as their products. I have now moved all our money to First Tech.
