About GE Service Contracts

This profile has not been claimed by the company. See reviews below to learn more or submit your own review.

GE appliances come with a traditional warranty, but the company also offers extended coverage with Bodewell Care Protection Plans. Backed by Assurant, GE’s authorized provider of extended warranties, these plans cover parts and labor for appliance repairs after the manufacturer’s warranty expires. You can pick and choose which appliances or systems to cover.

    Pros & Cons

    Pros

    • Different contract lengths
    • Nationwide availability
    • Pick-and-choose coverage

    Cons

    • Third-party administration

    Bottom Line

GE Service Contracts lets you decide which appliances you want to be covered. Customer service and coverage can be confusing since a third party sells the warranties, but we like that coverage is widely available.

    GE Service Contracts coverage

GE extended service contracts work differently from traditional home warranties that cover a wide range of systems and appliances. With GE Service Contracts, your individual appliance is covered through a Bodewell Care Protection Plan, which is backed by Assurant, GE’s partner. Each appliance’s extended service contract has an annual fee and lasts between two and five years. Most appliances maintain their extended service contracts when transferred to a new owner.

    Plans

The Bodewell Care Protection Plan from Assurant covers GE appliances between 10 and 20 years old, depending on the plan and appliance type. The following GE products have extended coverage options:

    • Refrigerators
    • Freezers
    • Microwaves
    • Dishwashers
    • Washers and dryers
    • Ranges
    • Cooktops
    • Ovens
    • Water filtration systems
    • Air conditioners
    • Small appliances
    • Damage from power surges
    • TVs

    GE Service Contracts cost

GE extended service contracts typically cost between $78 and $250 a year per appliance. You can choose between paying for the extended service upfront or making several payments.

The following table shows the average annual cost to cover common appliances, based on a quote for a Houston, Texas, home.

    ApplianceAverage one-year cost
    Clothes dryer $93
    Dishwasher $135
    Cooktop $78
    Range $78
    Washing machine $147
    Refrigerator $250
Prices are based on quotes for Houston, Texas, and are accurate at the time of publishing.

You can find more estimates on the Bodewell Care Protection Plan website.

    GE Service Contracts coverage exclusions

GE extended service contracts don’t cover:

    • Cosmetic damage
    • Repairs already covered by a manufacturer’s warranty or recall
    • Consumable items like lightbulbs and batteries
    • Damage from "acts of God"
    • Consumer abuse
    • Unauthorized repairs
    • Defects that existed before you signed the contract
    • Services performed outside of the U.S.
    • Water filtration systems if the water is unsafe
    • Damaged caused by computer viruses
    • Appliances using unapproved components
    • TV stands or wall mounts

Be sure to review the terms and conditions of your contract for more information.

GE Service Contracts claims and coverage limits

You can file a claim and schedule a repair online through Assurant. Enter your contract number and ZIP code into the site to bring up your plan details. After verifying your contact information, you’ll have the option to describe the problem in more detail and schedule the repair. The site also has a live chat function to provide you with additional help if you need it.

    Coverage limits

The Bodewell Care Protection Plan comes with some coverage limits. The repair or replacement can’t exceed the original purchase price, and some systems may have specific caps. For example, HVAC systems are only covered for up to $1,000.

The other thing to keep in mind is that the plan only applies in full if the manufacturer’s warranty has expired. If the appliance still has some coverage under the original warranty, GE Service Contracts will only address issues not already covered by that warranty.

    GE Service Contracts FAQ

    Is GE Service Contracts legit?

GE Service Contracts might be worth it if you want to customize your coverage and avoid paying for costly repairs after your manufacturer’s warranty ends. Like all extended warranties, it comes down to whether you’re willing to make low monthly payments to avoid the possibility of a large, one-time repair expense. Most GE extended warranties are relatively affordable, and we recommend them if you can fit the cost into your budget.

    What is GE Service Contracts?

GE Service Contracts are extended warranties for GE appliances. The appliances come with standard warranties that cover the product for a specified period, but you can also purchase an extended service contract for continued coverage once that warranty period ends.

The terms and conditions section of your contract has more details.

How long is the waiting period for GE Service Contracts?

Coverage for repairs not included in the manufacturer’s warranty will go into effect on the day of purchase. However, full coverage doesn’t usually start until the manufacturer’s warranty expires, at which point there’s a 30-day waiting period. GE Appliance Service and Repair 1-800-GECares (1-800-432-2737). They should change their number to 1-800-GEChaos... never experienced worse customer service. We called for leaky washer, they made an appointment three weeks out, their tech shows, without any thorough inspections, he deduced it was the soap dispenser, he orders the part, three weeks later, he replaces the soap dispenser, didn't wait to run a full cycle, concluded that the leak is fixed takes $400 payment and leaves.

Leaks comes back one hour after, the techy disappears, stop answering his calls, called the main number, schedule another tech to come a week later, on the day of the appointment, they can reschedule for a week later, then reschedule again and again, it's been 60 days and still they continue to reschedule. I tried to get my money back they refused. I disputed the charge with credit card and now I am looking on suing them in small claims court. So incompetent, they should shut down their service dept. and hire a third party company to take over.

Our 20 year old GE oven went out. It’s an amazing oven so we decided to contact GE to repair it. We knew what the problem was and conveyed that to them. On the phone BEFORE scheduling someone to come out they got the make and model of our oven. When the repair man shows up he did not have the necessary equipment to run diagnostics on the oven AND he said that they cannot even order parts for our oven anymore. We paid $130 for a guy to stand in our kitchen to tell us they can’t do anything about it. That is down right stealing. Maybe give us a heads up when we called to schedule? At least bring the proper equipment to run diagnostics? Sickening! Now we are out $130 and still need a new oven, which WILL NOT be a GE!

Hot point washer purchased 10/7/2021. Washer not draining and contacted GE customer service 5/5/2022. They contacted Illinois Appliance repair. Service was scheduled for 5/9/22. They never showed. We tried for days to reach them. We had the office number. No return call after numerous attempts until 5/13/2022 when they finally called with lots of excuses and said they didn't get an order or it was sent online and they haven't checked that system in a while.

I reached out again after no call and they said after checking into things they called 5/26/22 and said they found the order but said GE cancelled the service. I called GE again and they scheduled a GE tech. They said they didn't cancel it was the repair center that did. The service was scheduled for now 6/10/2022 from 8-12. We got a text the day before to say they would arrive and all the details. They didn't show. I received an email saying thank you for rescheduling your appointment for 6/22/2022. I did not reschedule! Called GE today 6/11/2022 and they said dispatch told them no tech was available in our area and they had rescheduled it. No call or text! They have assured me there will be someone on the 22nd. We shall see. In the meantime stagnant water is in my washer and drinking it up. And no I can't call a company I know and have them service it if I want it covered under my warranty.

May 2nd a repair tech came out and didn't fix anything or order parts. We called May 9th to find out why it's not being repaired. They scheduled for May 19th came out and ordered parts and rescheduled for June 2nd. They canceled the call saying they didn't have the parts. The parts were already at the property. Then the next time they can reschedule us is June 16th. Absolute trash for customer care. Jackie was one of the nastiest people you could have dealt with. We have been waiting over 30 days to get a stove fixed. Stay away from any of their products if you can.

I was informed that my unit was out of warranty and GE would not stand behind it. Unit was purchased 13 months ago and professionally installed 11 months ago. Sadly, the unit lasted less than 1 year and GE goes by the date of sale. I'll be buying a unit to replace it from another manufacturer.

Way too much to detail. Every aspect from customer service to repair was the worst experience we have ever had! Terrible communication. Wrong parts. Many rescheduled appointments. No responses. Only finally got a response when we filed a complaint with BBB. And still never solved the problem!

When we purchased the house in 1999 there was a GE Monogram refrigerator in it from when it was built in 1996. The sellers purchased an extended warranty to go with it and we've renewed faithfully since with GE service when they came out. GE has been out and kept it running for 25.5 years now under the plan most recently in January 2021. When we scheduled another call for August 2021, they sent a different company out who said, "oh, the model and serial number don't match our records so we can't service it." This even though they'd serviced it for 22 years and they'd been the one to pull it out, read and enter the numbers.

Given we never provided either to them and only GE's factory service had ever renewed it and entered the numbers, their inability to accurately record and track the original serial numbers is awful. How they stay in business like is one question. We've ordered a new refrigerator, but we're hoping the Assurant would honor the warranty we'd paid for to keep it cooling until the new one arrived. No such luck.

Was able to get the ongoing problem repaired. Had to use my 35 years of customer service experience and knowledge to sort out the initial contacts.

      Original Review: June 10, 2021

Have been a good GE customer, four homes and two remodels using GE products. Now we have a GE washer that has had an ongoing problem that GE service cannot solve. We scheduled another appointment that GE could not make and GE had to reschedule. The rescheduled time would be a week away. I do not understand that by no fault of ours we are pushed to the end of the line for service. Plus the rude customer service representative was of no help, since she continued talked over me when I tried to explain my issue...then hung up on me. Great customer no service. One STAR rating was way too high, but no STAR might get ignored. Last GE product in my lifetime and anyone else I can bring along.

We purchased new construction in August 2020 along with a 1-year home warranty. We have a top-of-the-line GE washer and dryer. As we adjusted to the new appliances, I realized that the washer didn't sound as it should. Lots of banging and shaking. I recorded a couple short videos to document which cycle it was occuring. I contacted our builder who registered a claim with GE Warranty Services in December, 2020. Here we are in April, 2021 and they still have not repaired or replaced the machine. I have had multiple GE techs call and visit the house only to claim they need different parts. At what point is it better to simply replace the machine and repair the faulty one on their own schedule. They can sell it later as refurbished. I have been totally inconvenienced by this process and GE's lack of supporting their manufacturer's warranty.
