Home Warranty of America provides 13-month terms — most other home warranty companies only have 12-month contracts. The higher of its two service call fee options is on the pricier side at $100, but it's not out of the average range for the industry, which is $60 to $125.

Home Warranty of America coverage exclusions

In some instances, there are parts of otherwise covered items that will be excluded from coverage. It’s important to read your contract to fully understand what coverage for each item truly entails.

Home Warranty of America does specify some coverage exclusions, which is typical for all home warranty service plans. Often, parts that are not essential to the item performing its core function may be excluded. For example, dishwashers are covered by both of HWA’s plans, but racks, baskets, rollers and door seals are not covered. Similarly, the electrical system coverage won’t cover items like fixtures.

You can find a full list of exclusions in Home Warranty of America's sample contract.

Home Warranty of America claims and coverage limits

Claims can be submitted online or through the company’s toll-free number 24/7, including holidays. Emergency services can be rushed at HWA’s discretion. Someone over the age of 18 must be present in the home during the repair.

To request service from Home Warranty of America:

    1. Submit a claim online or over the phone as soon as an issue is discovered.
    2. HWA will contact an authorized technician within 48 hours to schedule your requested repair.
    3. Pay the service call fee ($75 or $100, depending on your plan).

Should the repair fail or the same issue reoccur within the service recall period, HWA will send a technician to complete new repairs without charging you a service fee or any additional costs.

    Coverage limits

Home Warranty of America’s coverage limits per term are no more than $5,000 per covered item or $15,000 total per contract term. None of its plans cover preexisting conditions, which is standard in the industry.

Specific coverage limits and maximum payouts depend on the appliance or system in need of repair or replacement — these are outlined in the chart below.

ItemHome Warranty of America’s coverage limit
Electrical or plumbing rust and corrosion $2,000
Heating systems, tankless water heaters, well pumps and saltwater pool equipment $1,500
In-ground pool and spa equipment, water heaters and stand-alone ice makers or freezers $1,000
Ductwork and plumbing systems $1,000 for inaccessible items
    Septic systems and toilets $500
Burglar and fire alarm systems, ceiling and exhaust fans and central vacuums $400

Pretty poor home warranty. I've used them a few times and most contractors are poor at best. We had a couple contractors that showed up on time and did reasonable work. But for the most part HWA must hire subpar contractors with little to no experience and poor workmanship. I needed all the locks rekeyed in my house and it took the contractor (Locksmith IQ) 4-hours to completed it and had to have him come back 2 more times to fix the locks. I paid the $75 fee, but he said I needed 2-cylinders for an additional $150 to Replace cylinders and rekey all locks the same.

After he left two locks were hard to turn or not open at all and we got locked out. The next time he came it cost me another $75, plus additional $45 for parts and still couldn't fix them. He came back the next day to replace the 2 locks with deadbolt locks. Poor sloppy workmanship, plus another 2 hours to install them. So it cost us $345 for a poorly done job that a real locksmith would have done in an hour for less money. I definitely wouldn't recommend HWA to anyone.

I was bundled with this company as suggested by my mortgage broker at closing when we bought our house. I have had to use their services twice, on the same identical product. Unfortunately the repair lasted more than the warranty period for the first repair before the replaced component failed again the exact same way, so we had to pay another $100 for a service call for the same problem on the same appliance. The technician informs us that in the 4 months since the last repair, that the part is no longer available. Okay no big deal I have a home "warranty" right? Wrong.

They immediately offer me $338 in the form of a Lowe's gift card. There was an option to escalate to a representative, and so I chose that. They had me wait over a week for the very first available appointment, and they immediately tell me they can issue me a check for the same amount but nothing I can do will make them buy me a replacement oven. $338 will get you a nasty used old oven, nothing new.

I spent $600 on the home warranty, tied into my mortgage so it will collect interest, paid $200 in service calls for the same problem on the same appliance, and now I'm stuck paying the difference for a new oven because their policy is to screw you over from the start (it's in the policy when you sign up, like the nice lady said on the phone as she was robbing me of any reconciliation). A literal waste of a few hundred dollars, I could've saved and done the repair myself. Upon further research, the part is still available for over $200, shame they couldn't just save me the trouble like I paid them to do.

In the past, I have found this company to be helpful and reasonable. However, I have made three claims in August 2023 and September 2023 and for all of these, I paid hundreds of dollars for technicians that couldn't fix anything. Most recently, I paid $100 for a technician to fix my garbage disposal. After his visit, now the garbage disposal won't turn off, but HWA won't do anything about it because they say the technician reported the problem as resolved. If I want it fixed, I'll have to call yet another technician and pay another $100. What is the point of having this if I will end up spending more on technician services fees than if I had just replaced the whole thing?

This is the worst service company in USA. First, None of the customer services reps is understands proper English, but the worst part about the company is the way they scam their customer. When you file for a claim, they charge a $100 technician service fee; which is very normal for most warranty company. However, you will have to pay 50/50 for any repair or replacement.

I had a water a heating system replacement claim, they approved it and said that I need to pay $650 noncovered charge which I agreed. They called me, and said that once they order the unit, they will schedule a technician to replace it. Technician came to my house with the unit. I looked at the unit brand, and scan it, I found that they cost only $520 at Lowe's. I was so frustrated because they only paid for the unit and I had to pay for all parts and labor cost.

STAY AWAY AND PLEASE WRITE YOUR EXPERIENCE TO HELP SAVE OTHER PEOPLE MONEY, AND HOPEFULLY THE GOVERNMENT SHUT THIS SCAM ORGANIZATION DOWN. I know they will come and refute the review, but I have all the receipts, email communication, and I am willing to share to help other people avoid them. If you do your research, this company was sued before, was bought out by another company because it could not stand on its own. I am pretty sure they will go through the same again with this business model.

Hvac system was not cooling properly. Paid tech and was told nothing wrong. Had system serviced a few months later and was told heat portion would have to be shut down due to a Crack in a heating component. Ac still halfway working at that time. Called to place another claim. System stopped working by the time their tech came out. Been going in circles with this company for almost two weeks. No working hvac system and no temp system offered until they decide on a resolution. My suggestion is to run away from this company. No stars.

This company is horrible. They have terrible customer service and they will find any little excuse possible to not have to pay on a valid claim. They rejected our AC claim recently because they said the technician said our unit had weak valves on it but the company we ended up hiring to do the work said there was absolutely nothing wrong with the valves at all. Previously they sent a company out to work on our other AC unit who recommended replacing the entire coil and they wanted us to pay $800 for the “upgrades” but there were no upgrades only replacement parts. We had another company come out and look at it and they said there was just a little $40 part that needed to be replaced and they replaced it and the unit worked completely fine after that. So they are ripping off their clients and have these repair companies in their pockets to try and make more money off you. Definitely stay away from this company.

Hello. This is concerning my air conditioner that gave out. I bought my house, a new house, back about 10 months ago, and everything was working fine. The inspection on the house, everything was working as is, working good, and what have you. But 10 months later, I start having problems with the central AC. I called the home warranty because it was given to me as part of the sale of the house. So, I called them up and set up a claim. They sent a technician out to my house to check the unit and they found that because I had not kept up with the maintenance on this unit, that they could not cover the compressor that burned out. So, my claim was denied. And like I say, this people don't claim [sic – practice] what they preach. They claim that the units are covered a hundred percent, but yet, when I filed a claim, I found out pretty fast that they denied my claim. So, I would be weary with this company, the Home Warranty of America. They're just not worth the money that you're gonna spend monthly. At the end, they won't cover anything. I'm now stuck with the bill of replacing the whole system out of pocket and believe me, they have just lost a customer. I will make an effort for everyone else to know what this company does. Thank you.

Hi, I have a refrigerator that stopped working for more than 45 days now. I have gone back and forth with Home Warranty of America to get it repaired, however they do not help us at all. They said they scheduled at least 5 technicians to repair my fridge but none of them showed up. They partially approved 1 claim, which means I have to pay more than $500 to repair the fridge. In spite of the technician and me sending them the invoice they choose to ignore it and keep asking for more information.

They do not transfer the phone to their supervisor to talk. They hang up on us each time we call. If we add our number in the call back list, no one ever calls back. It is a waste of money with them. No customer service person, if by chance you get connected come connect you to the a cancellation team to cancel the policy. I wasted more than $800 on them and still nothing is being done to repair my fridge. I paid at least $650 + taxes for this home warranty and have already spent more than $150 on just having the technicians look at my fridge and nothing. Please do not waste your money and time with them.
