    What is Protection Direct?

Protection Direct is a contract provider for vehicle servicing. The company offers paid plans that help cover vehicle repair costs after your limited warranty expires. These are sometimes referred to as extended warranties; legally, though, these contracts aren’t defined as warranties. The company offers some complimentary services, including 24/7 roadside assistance, rental vehicle coverage and parts and labor.

Protection Direct simplifies car repairs; all you need to do is show an Automatic Service Excellence (ASE) mechanic of your choice your ID card and pay your deductible. From there, the shop contacts Protection Direct; once the company approves the repairs, it pays your shop directly.

    How does Protection Direct work?

Protection Direct offers a number of contract options, though its policies vary depending on location. The company’s nationwide service coverages include:

    • Powertrain: Engine, transmission and four-wheel drive
    • Diamond: Engine, transmission, alternator, starter, steering and AC
    • Elite: Engine, transmission, electrical, power windows, locks, fuel system and AC
    • Gold: Engine, transmission, electrical, steering, cooling system, fuel system, brakes and AC
    • Platinum: Engine, transmission, steering, high-tech electrical, GPS, radio, brakes, suspension, fuel system, AC and fluids.
    • Premier: Exclusionary coverage; covers everything but components listed in contract

The company offers special vehicle service contracts in California:

    • Powertrain: Engine, transmission, four-wheel drive and drive axle
    • Standard: Engine, transmission, steering, electrical, brakes, suspension and AC
    • Premium: Engine, transmission, steering, high-tech electrical, cooling system, fuel system, brakes, suspension and AC
    • Elite: Engine, transmission, steering, high-tech electrical, GPS, radio, brakes, suspension, fuel system, AC and fluids
    • Elite Plus: Exclusionary coverage; covers everything but components listed in contract

All protection plans come with complimentary 24/7 roadside assistance and rental vehicle coverage.

    Protection Direct costs

Protection Direct costs depend on factors like coverage type, location and vehicle age, model and mileage. These plans cover the costs of parts and labor to help you avoid sudden surprise expenses. Each coverage type requires a deductible of $100 per visit. The company doesn’t list any other costs on its website. Usually, this type of contract costs between $350 and $700. Call the company’s customer service line for a specific quote.

    Protection Direct FAQ

    Where is Protection Direct available?

Protection Direct is available nationwide, though its coverage options in California are different than in the rest of the country.

Does Protection Direct cover used vehicles?

Yes, Protection Direct does cover used vehicles. Some pre-owned vehicles come with extended warranties, but Protection Direct recommends securing coverage before your warranty expires.

Yes. Protection Direct plans typically have a $100 deductible per visit.

Can I pick my own mechanic with Protection Direct?

    Is Protection Direct worth it?

Protection Direct can help relieve the pressure of major vehicle repair costs. Its service contracts cover significant repairs, which can be especially helpful once your manufacturer’s warranty expires. It also provides complimentary roadside assistance and rental vehicle coverage while your car’s in the shop. Some customer reviews also report high-pressure sales tactics, however. Ultimately, you should look into multiple companies before choosing a provider.

    Customer Service

    Reviewed Sept. 7, 2023

I wanted to cancel my contract but they said try a month for free. Not taking no for an answer, I said ok. Following month I called to cancel again. The guy at customer service said, "If your car breaks down it will cost $1500." I said fine, l’ll walk to work, he said, "What if it snows or rains, really?" "l’ve walked in snow before, I would still like to cancel." He said, "Fine. You’re canceled." I said, "Can I have a confirmation number?" He said “I literally said you were canceled “. So I literally called the company, they gave me customer service again, so I literally sent them an email asking for confirmation. Probably will not receive anything. My only advice is to research before agreeing to any warranty.

I received a reminder card in the mail about my car. I bought my car from a new car dealer but it was a used car. Bought it Feb. 2020 and it is a 2017. The dealership gave me a total loss protection addendum and mechanical failure service contract which is for a 4 year term with a $250.00 deductible. When I got the card and realized what it was for, I called the number on the back. The salesman that answered the phone was very professional and pleasant. He was not pushy by any means. He gave me all the available plans and prices. He helped me determine which would be the best bang for my dollars. He explained in detail what all it would cover and was very patient with all my questions.

I pay for 2 years and the warranty is for 5 years as long as I own the vehicle. I have roadside assistance and rental car also. It was part of the contract with no additional cost to me. It has only a $100.00 deductible. The cost was very affordable and fit right into my budget. It was a great experience. The wait period is very understandable also. 30 days and 1,000 miles from date of purchase. I am so very satisfied with this extended warranty company so far anyways.

I purchased the contract from Service Protection Direct in June of 2016. One of the terms of said contract was there was a waiting period of thirty days plus 1,000 miles. November 2017 I had engine trouble. I took the truck in to the dealership to be diagnosed for a knocking noise. The company wouldn't authorize the engine teardown, I had to agree to be responsible for the cost. They would reimburse me if they approved the repairs. They decided not to repair the vehicle. Said it was from a pre-existing condition. There was NO WAY I could have driven the truck for 1 year and 5 months and eleven hundred + miles without it seizing up long before now. Service Protection Direct also known as Marathon Group is King of the Rip-off artist.

This company does not know what they are doing. I signed up for it and gave them my address. Well when they put the address in the system they used my wife and my name as the street address. When I went to cancel the service they kept saying they couldn't until I received the contract packet. I never received it and had enough of it and told them they need to cancel it right now. The guy would not shut up about the reason why I was cancelling it and I sat on the phone with him for a good 30 mins before he would cancel it. He rudely hung up on me after it was cancel. He said, "You happy now? It's cancelled" and hung up. I called back and filed a complaint about him but doubt anything will happen. This company just sucks. Do not I repeat do not go with them.

Do not purchase warranty! They refused to cover what was a definitive issue that a certified GMC dealer stated any other warranty insurance company would have no problem covering. That this company was the rudest the worst company they have ever dealt with. It took over a month for them to even look at the vehicle. The added expense of a rental car cost is 1,000$. They are being investigated by the California Gov. For it appears fraudulent handling of warranty claims.

This company sold my elderly mother, who has dementia and is on a fixed income, an expensive extended warranty. My mother has not had a driver's license for years and her car is in storage. When I called to cancel and request a refund, they questioned if my mother actually had dementia, were rude and aggressive. Beware of this company. Scam. Beware. I am pursuing legal action, reporting to Adult Protective Services, as well as, to Better Business Bureau.

I purchased this coverage in February 2016 and faithfully paid my premium monthly on time. When I needed work done on my vehicle I was told I was not covered so I canceled my coverage. I sent these ** my $115 faithfully for the next 6 months and when I wrote them to get a refund I'm only getting 1/3 of my money. They say "fees? what fees?" This company is dishonest and I referred a family member and they canceled also. Something need to be done about Companies that talk a good talk but when it come time to get a repair they say you're not qualified and won't refund your money. I say **. I am really upset because people don't have money to throw away and this company is full of it. Do not waste your money with this company.

They put the extended warranty on a vehicle that I no longer have. When we called them they were extremely rude!! When we told them that we were going to get a lawyer because they were refusing to reimburse us they said, "good luck." If anyone have a legitimate contact at this company please let me know. The two representatives that were belittling and beyond rude to myself and my grandmother (of all people) were Andrew ** and Jason **. Any help with that anyone can send over will be greatly appreciated!
