Sunlux panels and equipment

Sunlux currently offers SunPower, Aptos, Hanwha Q.Cells, Panasonic and REC solar panels.

Sunlux installation

Sunlux solar installation only takes one or two days, but the prep time can take up to 90 days.

  1. The installation process starts with a visit to the location, where specialists survey for challenges and measure the available space.
  2. Within the following week, Sunlux designers draft a plan that matches the customer's desired aesthetic and efficiency.
  3. The company then applies for permits. Permit approval may take up to a month.
  4. Once the permits arrive, the company will schedule an appointment to install your new solar energy system.
  5. After installation, the system must pass an inspection. Once it has passed inspection, energy production can begin.

Their rep Adam's knowledge of what Sunlux could provide for me impressed me. I felt comfortable with the information he gave me. They had a good team that advised me. They provided me with a plan for how the panels would be arranged. They responded to my questions regarding scheduling along the way, and then they set up a schedule and maintained it as they said they would.

The installation day was a hot one for the workers. They did a difficult job well. I got some erroneous information from one of the executives at Sunlux that caused me some distress, but it turns out his erroneous information didn't impact the way that my system was installed. His erroneous information didn't impact the way that my system was installed so there was a little problem there. But that left me with a bad taste in my mouth for the way he treated customers.

Also, I’m receiving a little less power than I was predicted to have. My system is rated at over nine kilowatts per hour but it doesn't ever generate that much. But I don't think that's the fault of Sunlux. It's just the way the side of my roof points to the sun. I'm happy with the outcome because I want to avoid having to overpay for electricity. So far, the system seems to be doing the job that I want. My electric bill is being reduced. Sunlux is definitely worth including in your bidding process. I do not regret going with them, and I would recommend others to consider them.

I really like the sales guy. The project manager follow-up was generally pretty good. They took on quite a lot of projects because of the state deadlines. So things slowed down a little bit with regard to getting it installed and getting the inspection scheduled. It took a lot longer than we anticipated. But overall, I was very happy with Sunlux. We started to talk to them in March and there's still a little repair that has to be done as the electrical installation wasn't quite put in correctly. But generally, they did a very good job. We like it. It seems high quality. The cost was pretty good. But the quality of the product was not quite the best one on the market. There were some better ones out there. But the financing benefits really tipped the balance for us.

It took us several months to get the permission to operate, which is what actually lowers the bill. But we definitely are seeing usage and the numbers. We're showing we're getting the benefits of solar. We weren't getting the benefits of selling the excess power back to the power company until very recently. I was a little disappointed that we weren't able to benefit from the high output summer time. It took three months for that to get through. There was some snag with the paperwork. They filed the wrong paperwork with something. I didn't quite follow which agency got the wrong paperwork, but that held up the PTO approval by the power company. At one point, they said that the approval was unlikely, which was a bit of a stress for us. But they managed to square all that away after some fairly strongly worded email.

Southern California Edison has changed the net metering. The amount of money that Edison buys the power from people with solar panels is going to get cut by 75%. If you don't have your solar panels approved by Edison before April 17th, whatever Edison pays to buy power from people with solar panels gets changed by 75%. So, it would be more cost-effective to do it now. If we waited until after April 17th, people are saying it's gonna kill the solar industry in Southern California because Edison's not gonna be paying homeowners for the extra energy that they produce. So, we felt compelled to have solar panels installed because of the Edison deadline. So far, Sunlux hasn't started any work except process paperwork. So far, processing the paperwork has been fine.

Edison approved the location of my meter. We're gonna get the meter changed out because it doesn't support the solar system. So, they're gonna put a new electrical panel box in where the meter goes. In order to do that, they have to get Edison's approval for the new location. So, they put a sticker on my existing box saying it's ok to put the new one in the same spot. It's procedural thing with Edison.

So far, I had no problem with Sunlux. I had a question for the project manager, and I emailed them. They called me right away. There's really no problem getting questions answered. Saving money on the bill is kind of irrelevant because we're paying for the panels. So with the cost of the panels versus just paying the electric bill, I save a few hundred dollars a month versus my average electric bill. That's all I'll be saving for the most part over the next 20 years. The money I would spend to pay my electric bill, I'm paying for solar panels. I'm not saving any money. I'm just moving it from Edison to the solar panels.

Things have generally gone okay with Sunlux and the only thing that is disappointing is my project manager is out in Texas and I live in a three-story house and they keep saying that there are things that are preventing the project from going to the next level. So, I'm trying to see if they can complete the project work-up so then it can go to my HOA. It's stalled out a little bit. So, I'm waiting for Sunlux to take the next step. Everyone on the team seems to be receptive and seems to be trying to do their best to provide appropriate services. But every month that goes by that I don't have solar panels on the roof, I'm losing money because that's money that I'm paying into a power bill that I wouldn't necessarily have to pay. So, Sunlux is in a tough spot because the faster they get the solar panels up, the happier the customer is. So, I'm just sitting here watching the clock.

We're just starting this process and there's still gonna be many steps left. So, if six months goes by and there are still no solar panels, I'm out a couple of $1,000 in solar savings. Six months from now, if we get to a place where things are not moving forward appropriately, I'm gonna be upset. But right now, things are good. We're only a month In so there's plenty of time. I'm flexible. Generally speaking, I'm happy.

The very first guy I talked to was incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. He had worked in the industry for many years and in many positions. But it seems like we're kind of getting stuck here as far as the next step because it can't go in in the original configuration that everybody thought it was going to be. So now they're trying to come up with some alternative. But I haven’t heard from them yet. It seems it's going to be more expensive, and it makes sense because it's more trouble. It's going to cost as much as it would cost to have power from the power company. So it's going to die down even though I'm getting the break on the taxes. If only it's going to work.

Sunlux is trying to do an upsell. They think I need to replace the electrical panel. The difficulty is that this house was built in 1961. It has the original electrical panel in it and there is no more label on the panel that contains the detailed information that they say they need to calculate the amperage load potential of the busbar, which is where all the power goes through. They can do that math, but they're not willing to. They want to upgrade the panel and that's another four grand. I don't want to do a panel upgrade and we don't need it. But Sunlux said the inspector could give them trouble. They can identify the panel through the breakers, but they won't do that. I can understand they're trying to avoid trouble and it is an extra mile to go. But sometimes you got to do the extra mile.

People didn't show up at certain days. Communication could have been a bit better. Other than that, I'd recommend Sunlux. The sales visit was informative. The Enphase inverter app that comes with the system tracks the energy usage, production and consumption.

It took a long time for everything to go through. At one point, they messed up regarding putting up the panels and they had to revise it. They had to go through the whole process all over again. The system was installed on the first day of summer and I finally was able to get SCE to sign off on it on the last day of summer. I felt like I missed out on a lot of money. Those three or four months where all the energy that the solar panels were creating was put directly into the grid for free. I wish that things would have been faster. Also, I always had to keep calling to make sure things got done. I can understand the volume of people that want to get solar but I felt like after my solar panels got installed, it was no longer a priority. I was put on the wayside while they tried to install as many as they could to make more money.

Another issue I have is when I got this thing back from another company that's supposed to be a middleman, they said that according to the solar people, it was bought for $10,000. I paid 20,000 for it. I don't know what's going on there. If they upped the price by 50% and it's supposed to be based on 10,000 where they can add up to an extra $10,000 worth of profit, I don't think that's too cool. But I'm happy I got the solar, although I'm getting error messages right now. I'm hoping that it's gonna be performing to the top, close to 100%, if possible.

Everything was good until the job was done. The communication broke down. After the system was installed, I was having a problem with the Wi-Fi and the app and that was when I first noticed that it was hard to get ahold of Sunlux for those things. I had some questions but couldn't get a call back. I had to call three times to get ahold of somebody. During the initial installation, they drilled holes through the ceiling. It took three weeks before we got somebody out to fix them. Once it was fixed, we've had a leak in one of those areas and it's been weeks since we've been promised that somebody would come out. When they came and did the installation, they requested the payment in full, but I should have held it back because now they have no incentive to fix the thing. Sunlux doesn't have a system that follows up very well for repairs. They come through, but you gotta be persistent with them.

Everything was fine the whole way through in our experience with SunLux. There was one minor correction someone had to come back and make. And that got done quickly and efficiently. It got inspected and it needed to be moved over a little. So, they came back and moved over a couple of panels.
