    What is Trupanion?

Trupanion offers both dog insurance and cat insurance. With Trupanion, all customers receive one simple plan that makes clear what’s covered and what’s not.

Trupanion plans cover all unexpected injuries and illnesses, reimbursing customers for 90% of their vet bills without payout limits once they’ve met their deductibles. Trupanion’s customer service team also lessens billing hassles by paying veterinarians directly.

Once you’ve enrolled, Trupanion’s waiting period for injury coverage is five days, which is shorter than the industry standard of 14 days. However, the waiting period before it covers treating any illnesses is 30 days.

    Trupanion plans

Trupanion pet health insurance offers just one type of plan, although it’s applicable to both cats and dogs. Trupanion’s pet insurance plan is more expensive than many of its competitors', but the plan is comprehensive, and rates don’t automatically increase as your pet ages. With Trupanion’s lifetime, per-condition deductible, customers save more in the long run for chronic conditions, too.

    What does Trupanion cover?

Trupanion pet insurance covers 90% of the cost to treat any new illness or condition that your pet experiences during the policy’s term. Its policies do not cover preexisting conditions, including any illness, injury or condition that your pet had before enrollment.

You have to wait at least five days to get coverage for injury treatment and 30 days for illness care. This is why it’s a good idea to enroll your pet while it’s young and healthy, before anything potentially serious and costly happens.

The company covers 90% of the cost of hereditary diseases, unidentified issues and congenital illnesses that are not preexisting conditions. This includes health problems that many other providers don’t cover, including:

    • Hip dysplasia
    • Vitamins and supplements
    • Dental illness
    • Orthopedic issues

    How much does Trupanion cost?

Trupanion dog insurance costs between $36 and $100 per month for most breeds, and Trupanion cat insurance costs between $23 and $57 per month. With Trupanion, pet owners can customize their coverage with a deductible up to $1,000 and add coverage enhancements, such as recovery care and pet owner assistance. Coverage enhancements add a few dollars to your premium every month.

Trupanion pet insurance plans include lifetime, per-condition deductibles instead of annual deductibles, meaning customers don’t have to keep paying year after year for a chronic condition. Once you’ve met the deductible for your pet’s condition, you’ll never have to pay the deductible again to treat it.

Trupanion does not offer a discount for multiple pets, but it does have a 30-day money-back guarantee if you’re not satisfied.

    Trupanion FAQ

    What is not covered?

Exam fees, taxes, wellness and preventive care and preexisting conditions are not covered. For an additional cost, you can purchase the Recovery and Complementary Care rider to cover alternative therapies and treatments.

    Does Trupanion cover vaccinations?

No, Trupanion’s pet health insurance plan does not cover vaccinations. It only covers unexpected expenses, which don’t include wellness care, like vaccinations or preventive medications.

How long does it take to complete a claim with Trupanion pet insurance?

If your vet uses Trupanion’s software, Trupanion can directly pay the vet in minutes. You can ask if your veterinary clinic or hospital uses it. For reimbursement, the claims team processes the majority of claims within 24 hours, keeping you informed throughout the process. Many reviewers who pay at the time of visit mention getting reimbursed within two weeks.

    Does Trupanion cover bloodwork?

It depends. If the bloodwork is routine, Trupanion pet insurance does not cover it. However, if it’s required as part of treatment for a covered illness or injury, it is covered.

    Does Trupanion cover neutering?

Like most pet insurance companies, Trupanion does not cover the cost of neutering.

    Is Trupanion worth it?

Trupanion is a pet insurance company offering a wide variety of coverage and convenience benefits. It has decades of experience, covers over 500,000 pets and has paid out over $1 billion in claims paid.  We recommend getting a quote and comparing coverage and cost with offers from other pet insurers.

This company owes me a refund and told me to wait 8 to 10 weeks, Which I did, and I think it's an absolutely ridiculous time frame. And now that we're past that time frame. I am being told that they're now having issues with IT tickets and the manager that I escalated to (Toni) can't do anything. The company has no problem taking money out of my account every month, But yet when I need to refund I get jerked around. Terrible.

Trupanion is a scam. They will pay for nothing. Do not waste your money. We have filed four times on our puppy, and they have actually come back and cited pre-existing conditions. A puppy?? You have got to be kidding.

My pets last visit at the vet was for terrible pain. She was experiencing in one of her ears. It was certainly not yeast related but nevertheless the claim was refused in a matter of moments after submission because your interpretation of her condition was that it must have been a pre existing condition. There are a number of varying factors that can present themselves when a pet is displaced with terrible discomfort due to ear pain. One can't generalize a say "oh it's yeast" and refuse the claim. As noted I tried sending 2 emails prior to receiving a questionnaire which I negatively responded to, and now you took time to reach out, thank you for that.

When I first signed on with Trupanion, the rate was set at "X". A couple of months later I received a letter stating, guess what "we've had a lot of Irish doodles in your area with claims so we have to raise your premium". I ask myself, many Irish Doodles, most don't even know what Irish Doodles is let alone own one. We live in a very small suburb a don't believe that there are several other ID's in the surrounding areas, nevertheless I took it on the chin and continue to pay my monthly premium, but that was a cheap shot by any standard. This has not been a very pet friendly insurance experience thus far, and I ask that you reconsider the refusal of this last issue and follow up visit we had with my pet.

This is not insurance, it is a scam!!! They never pay a claim and have a hundred reasons why all the procedures are not covered. GET YOURSELF DIFFERENT INSURANCE. It is a big waste of your $$. All we did was pay our monthly fee and never got a penny back. We took our dog to a specialist vet and they even denied his bill.

My cat developed a condition that led me to the painful decision to euthanize him to end his suffering. I am of course devastated and the $900+ vet bill that followed did not make it any easier. I was relieved to have pet insurance and thought that maybe something would be covered, but I was wrong. Trupanion did not cover anything. I was expecting the euthanasia to at least be covered or maybe even the cremation, but nope! Not even an exam fee, the injection to take away his pain, or his 1 hour on oxygen. What is the point in having pet insurance if they’re not even there to insure your hardest vet visit?

It says on their website that they cover you for “hereditary conditions” and “breed specific conditions”, however they don’t cover you for “pre-existing conditions”. “Congenital conditions your pet developed before birth” is also something their website says they cover, so I’d love to know how my cat that was born with a condition that would be considered “developed before birth” which later led to his death, falls under a pre-existing condition category. You can’t state that your coverage includes conditions existing before birth but retract that statement and label it as pre-existing or non payable once it means a payout is required. Do your research and read all the fine print, Trupanion seemed so great at first and their online agents are very friendly and kind, but don’t fall for them.

When you sign up for the insurance they highlight they pay for 90% of your bill minus deductible. They DON'T - They separate the Dr. bill from the procedure and pay NOTHING. They misrepresent the truth and then hide behind disclaimers.

Their website boasts "fast claims". But it's been 4 months and I'm still waiting. I filed 2 claims in June, and it is now September with no resolution, other than emails saying "We're working on it". After MULTIPLE calls wasting my own time, no answers. DO NOT FALL FOR THEM. They have nice agents, but awful service. They gave me excuses like "We're changing systems". That was 4 MONTHS AGO.

This "insurance" is a scam. I pay $1500 a year and my dog has a suspected auto-immune disease as of yesterday. In January, 2023 he sprained his paw at the beach, and in June, 2023 he tore a ligament in his left leg, which resulted in swelling but is now healed. Last week, he started having trouble getting up and seemed in pain. The vet saw him yesterday and said he now has some swelling in his knees which may be an auto-immune disease he developed. He never had fluid in his knees before! Yesterday, Trupanion denied coverage stating since my dog previously had swelling in his joints--(well, of course-he was injured), they are not covering the new suspected auto immune disease. That’s like saying, "Well, you sneezed and had a fever and runny nose in the past, so we are not covering your new cancer diagnosis because those symptoms you’re having now you had before. WHAT A SCAM!! BEWARE!!!
