How does Nationwide Pet Insurance work?

Nationwide acquired VPI Pet Insurance, also called VPI, in 2014. For pet owners whose pets need medical care, Nationwide Pet Insurance can help save thousands of dollars through reimbursement of veterinarian bills.

Request a quote online through Nationwide’s secure site or by phone. To get started, provide your ZIP code and your pet’s name, age and breed. Nationwide Pet Insurance then provides a quote for review. There is a 14-day waiting period for coverage after making your first payment.

    Nationwide Pet Insurance plans

Nationwide Pet Insurance offers four major plans for cats and dogs: Major Medical, Major Medical with Wellness, Whole Pet and Whole Pet with Wellness. Each plan includes nose-to-tail coverage, though conditions vary based on the plan type selected. All of these plans have a fixed deductible of $250.

    Major Medical
The most economical of Nationwide’s pet insurance plans, Major Medical covers basic accidents and illnesses and allows pet owners to use any veterinarian or hospital they like. The annual deductible for this plan is fixed at $250, and annual benefits are predefined depending on the condition. The Major Medical plan is not always available to older pets.
    Major Medical with Wellness
A step up from the Major Medical plan, Nationwide’s Major Medical with Wellness plan also includes wellness exams, vaccinations, bloodwork and illness prevention. As with the Major Medical plan, the annual deductible is $250, and annual benefit limits depend on the condition. This plan is not always available to older pets.
    Whole Pet
An option for older pets, Nationwide’s Whole Pet plan includes all the benefits of the Major Medical plan but adds some dental, behavioral, prescription and holistic treatment coverage. The annual deductible is fixed at $250 with $10,000 total annual benefits.
    Whole Pet with Wellness
Nationwide’s most comprehensive and most customizable policy, Whole Pet with Wellness has a wide range of coverage. While the annual deductible is set at $250 and annual benefits are unlimited, pet owners have the option to adjust their reimbursement level from 90% to 70% or 50%. A lower reimbursement percentage lowers the cost of this plan.

Note that the above plans may not be available for exotic pets. Nationwide requires owners of birds, reptiles, rodents and other exotic pets to call a Nationwide Pet Insurance customer service representative to receive information about plans, coverage and costs.

    Nationwide Pet Insurance coverage

Nationwide Pet Insurance covers accidents and illnesses and can also include preventive medicine, dental care, spaying, neutering and behavioral treatments. Nationwide’s most comprehensive plan, Whole Pet with Wellness, is the most expensive, but it also provides maximum benefits for pets of all types.

While each Nationwide Pet Insurance policy type has its advantages, many pet owners opt for the Major Medical with Wellness or Whole Pet with Wellness plan so their pets are fully covered.

Currently, Nationwide Pet Insurance does not cover:

    • Preexisting conditions
    • Grooming, including nail trims and shampoos
    • Expenses not directly related to the veterinary bill, like credit card fees
    • Certain plan restrictions based on specific policy type

Nationwide Pet Insurance defines preexisting conditions as injuries or illnesses that occurred before coverage started. This exclusion includes some hereditary conditions.

At Nationwide Pet Insurance, dogs and cats won’t be dropped from coverage based on their age or the number of claims filed.

How much does Nationwide Pet Insurance cost?

Nationwide Pet Insurance quotes vary depending on the plan you choose, but Nationwide dog insurance costs between $35 and $60 per month for most breeds, while cat insurance costs between $13 and $46. For dogs and cats, customers get a free quote online, but if you’re looking into Nationwide’s exotic pet insurance, you need to call for a quote.

Nationwide Pet Insurance's prices vary based on the breed and age of your pet. If you’re looking for a low-cost plan, consider choosing one with a variable reimbursement percentage. Unlike most pet insurance providers, Nationwide Pet Insurance offers reimbursement percentages as low as 50%, which lets customers pay more out of pocket for a vet bill but less in their monthly premiums.

Discounts are available to policyholders who enroll two or more pets or those who are already members of Nationwide.

    Nationwide Pet Insurance FAQ

    Is Nationwide Pet Insurance good?

Nationwide offers affordable pet insurance for dogs, cats and exotic animals. Although coverage is available for older animals, plans may be limited and premiums may be high. If you already have a policy with Nationwide or are looking to insure multiple pets, expect to receive discounts.

Be aware that the "Major Medical" plan is extremely limited and you have to call to see if there are other plans available to you. This isn't apparent on the sign-up page. I opted for Nationwide based on glowing personal reviews from my rescue group to insure my two dogs. On the sign up page, of the three different plan types offered by Nationwide, Major Medical was the only option shown for my older dog. I assumed that "Major Medical" would cover everything such as cancer, traumatic injuries, etc. But when my dog had a traumatic injury and cut a huge gash in his chest requiring surgery to repair the muscle, two overnight stays, and weekly follow-ups for almost two months, they only covered 20% of the total cost. He almost died from his injury, it was that bad.

The Major Medical plan is based on a list of itemized codes with a total annual payout for "bites & lacerations" of around $695. I argued that $695 would maybe pay for a simple wound cleaning at a vet's office, but not a surgery for a major cut! By submitting all of our medical records, x-rays, etc., they were able to find a few more codes from their itemized list to cover up to 20% of the cost. Now my dog has been diagnosed with cancer, but after reimbursing us for about $2000, we've already hit the annual limit for his type of cancer and that includes ALL treatments, x-rays, medications, etc.! Cancer is listed as one of the things "major medical" covers so I assumed we would be in the unfortunate event it happened to us. Don't be fooled by their "payout" calculator as they likely will not cover your costs at the end of the day.

My beloved cat just passed from terminal cancer and Nationwide told me they would reimburse me for euthanasia and cremation. They are deplorable and inhumane and now refuse to reimburse me for euthanasia. This is supposed to be a company that cares about animals but the public needs to be warned about them. I am a client for many years with all pets insured with them. They have overcharged me just because pets were a certain age even with no claims. Sadly with no symptoms until near the end when my beloved cat refused to eat and was suddenly having breathing problems, I found out he had terminal mouth and lung cancer. All was done right away to comfort him and to try to save him, but my cat passed in three days.

I called Nationwide to make sure they would pay me back and the limitations for reimbursement for euthanasia and cremation. I abided by those limits. Now they refuse to pay for euthanasia and say I misunderstood them but I took notes of the amounts quoted. Nancy **, a manager told me if that's what I understood they would pay me anyway but then turned around and refused me. I am struggling, severely disabled and broken hearted as my beloved pet of 12 years passed suddenly in my arms and my insurance company who I was loyal to and paid a lot to over the years now turned their back on me. I want to warn the public to stay away from Nationwide Pet Insurance. They act on the phone like they care and they do not care. If they did, like in my case grieving now with my loss, they would do the right thing and reimburse me. I am going to seek other insurance companies and I hope you do the same. Be warned about Nationwide.

I have 2 bearded dragons and I know from having cats that I wanted insurance. Unfortunately there are not many options. Drako had a spay surgery for reproductive disease and the claim was denied as they do not cover wellness or preventative surgery. I filed an appeal with a letter from the vet stating that there was a medical need and it was recommended that she have this surgery and it was still denied as preventative. Spay surgeries for a lizard cost over $1,000 so it is definitely not preventative. Do not recommend them due to the cost of exotic vets and the chance that your claim could be rejected. Do your research before signing with them.

Only writing this review in hope that it helps others with making a decision. I originally got pet insurance for our Dog through my workplace. It was with another company and the rate was about $40 per month. Nationwide bought them out and immediately things got worse. They raised rates and said to get a better rate we had to have a high deductible. In addition, they don't want to pay claims. They find any way to NOT TO PAY CLAIMS. This company does not care about their customers or their pets. Just this month our policy renewed and they raised our monthly rate from $131 to $188. When I called to find out why, it was the age of my dog. I get it my dog is older but to raise our rate by 43% seems ludicrous. They raised it significantly every year since buying out the other company.

I will NEVER buy any type of insurance through Nationwide. Anybody I talk to will hear about our experiences with them. One thing I will say is that when I have called in, their customer service folks are friendly and mostly helpful although they cannot give a straight answer on why we got a 43 percent increase except age. They disregard all the years where we have been paying a very expensive premium on time. Again, they want to take your money and avoid paying claims. I would not think a company name like Nationwide would conduct themselves so dishonestly but they do. Do your homework and read all the reviews you can before signing up.

I have been with them since I got my 2 little dogs 7 years ago from a rescue organization to help them. I can understand that they increased by 10 - 25% of insurance each year. I was surprised that both of their insurance increased by 50% this year in their senior years and they have more health problems than younger dogs. I will not continue to insure them since they do not value me as their valuable customer. They also do not appreciate me rescuing the fragile dogs.

Rather than reading the information submitted for the claim presented for diagnosing our dog's illness, they reached back into his history to find a pre-existing condition that did not apply and denied the claim. This pet insurance product is a scam. I am sorry that our employer has chosen to offer it on a payroll deduction basis.

Everything from conflicting information about a check being mailed but also not…?! Refusing to reimburse or expedite reviews due to ongoing delays and requests for additional information from several sources one at a time to drag out the process. Call center agents not grasping the concept of a conversation or just blindly sticking to a scripted response. So disappointing! Please insure your pets but look elsewhere for insurance.

Biggest scam on the planet. This insurance company is awful for your pets. DO NOT GET THEM. Seriously I have never seen one company so blatantly rip off its customers. They say they cover all these wellness expenses and such but literally pay out pathetic amounts when you file a claim. All payouts are practically in the $30-50 range regardless of how expensive exams/treatments are. Way better companies that respect their customers are out there. This is not one of them.
